How do you EMBOSS paper products?

How It Works. Embossing and Debossing both use two dies, with one placed on either side of the sheet of paper. Once pressed, one die pushes the page out giving it the raised effect. This can also be done in reverse in a process known as debossing, where an image is recessed below the page rather than raised.

What is Embossing Used for in the print world?

Embossing or Blind Embossing is the process of creating a raised image, design, or text on a paper or card stock. Debossing is the same except instead of a raised image, the image is pressed into the sheet. For a deboss, the male and female dies are switched so that the topside (front) of the sheet is pressed with the male die and the female die sits underneath it. When a deboss is registered to printing, one can create the appearance of an engraving. Embossing can be found on pocket folders, invitations, announcements, and even business cards and letterheads.

The high cost of Embossing and Debossing

We mentioned dies above. Dies are the metal plates that have the impression to be embossed,  engraved or etched out of them. Die can also refer to the male counterpart to the female emboss die, however these are usually referred to as counterdie (for plastic and metal) and make-ready for paper.

These dies are usually made of brass, copper, bronze or steel, and because of the details involved the process of die making can be pretty expensive.

If you are going to produce a large amount of an embossed item then the cost spread out over the entire run would be less per piece, on the other hand, If you are only producing a couple hundred invitations then it can seem pretty expensive.

A possible alternative to embossing

Raised letter printing (thermography) is available as well as foil stamping for invitations, reply cards, menus and letterhead. Thermography is a newer technique that raises the ink when printed. Due to embossing’s need for the metal dies the cost is much higher than thermography printing. No metal die is necessary for a thermography run, making this technique the less costly way to go.
