Aqueous Coating Services
What is Aqueous coating and what does it do for my printing?
Aqueous coating protects and enhances the look of your printing. Aqueous Coating is a clear, fast-drying environmentally friendly water-based coating that is usually applied to the entire printed piece in the final stage of a printing press.
Aqueous Coating provides a glossy or matte surface that deters dirt, fingerprints and scuffing, as well as adding a beautiful shine to the printing like that of this Prismatic Magic Brochure. Another key attribute for Aqueous coating is that items that need to be folded such as letters, brochures and booklets tend to crack much less at the fold site. Aqueous coating postcards will help in having your cards arrive in a more pristine condition after going through the Post Office mail machinery systems.
Aqueous Coating vs UV Coating
Aqueous coatings are less glossy than a UV but are more resistant to cracking when folded than UV coating. An Aqueous coating can only be applied as a flood (the entire sheet), as opposed to UV coatings, which can be applied as either a flood or as a spot (just a small area such as a logo).
Aqueous coatings are fast drying and attention must be paid to clean-up during any press stoppage. The difference is UV coatings stay open on press as long as there is no exposure to UV light. Once exposed to UV light, uv coating will solidify making it a great option as a spot coating for logos and on business cards.
You may ask: “Are UV or Aqueous coatings waterproof?” No, UV coating is not waterproof, but it is water resistant. Aqueous coating is water-based, and though it can be a good coating option for paper, UV coating offers greater gloss and better protection.
Should I get an Aqueous Coating on my print order?
Regardless of which coating you’re considering, UV or Aqueous, in most cases, it will help protect your final product while adding a beautiful shine. If you plan on mailing a postcard, a print coating is highly recommended and we suggest using UV. If your printed piece will be handled a lot, we recommend using an Aqueous coating as it will protect your printing without picking up fingerprints as easily as UV might. However, sometimes your printed piece might be hindered by a print coating. Note cards and Greeting cards, for example, do not need a coating, as applying one would make writing on the card difficult, defeating the intended purpose of your greeting cards! One option for these types of items is to only use a coation on the outside leaving the inside more writable.
What are the Benefits of Aqueous Coating
Aside from being wear-and-tear preventive, aqueous coatings improve packaging aesthetics and can boost a brand visually. If you’re searching for an ecologically friendly solution, this is a fantastic choice. It’s a water-based paint that’s not only healthier for the environment, but also offers a lot of additional benefits.
- Aqueous coating is Non-toxic & environmentally friendly: The treated paper can be recycled and the clean-up doesn’t require toxic cleaning agents.
- Cost-effective: This water-based coating is mainly used in line with the printing process as the last application after ink, delivering significant cost savings over a secondary process.
- Long-lasting and Clear: Aqueous coating is very fast drying and also less susceptible to yellowing like a varnish, making it a better alternative to varnish and your coating will look great for years.
