Perforating Services

What is Perforating?

A perforation on a printed item is a set of small holes in the paper. The process of creating perforations is called perforating, which involves removing bits of the workpiece with a tool. Perforating is often used to prevent tearing with paper that needs to be separated, such as pull-tab door hangers, coupon cards, or RSVPs. Need to have your print item perforated? Let us know! Dave will be happy to help!

What is a Perforation Line?

A perforation line is a line of small holes punched into a printed item such as tickets or forms. This line of holes makes it easy to remove one part of the ticket or form from the rest. Perforations can run horizontally or vertically and in some cases, both ways like on postage stamps. Perforating is usually done after all the printing has been completed.

How are perforated lines made?

The Perforated lines are punched into the paper as a bindery option for your print job. A tool called a perforating blade or wheel set at a slight slope known as a bevel. The blade/wheel will punch tiny holes in a straight line as the sheets move along.

The example above is our Purchase Order form and at the top there is a dashed line where the peroration will be when our form books will be made. The ½” above the dash will be used to staple bind the sets into books.

What is an Example of Perforated Paper?

That’s perforated paper! Sometimes there is a line, or a few lines, made of microscopic holes that makes it very easy to tear a portion of the sheet away. Think about a utility bill, a W-2 form or a signature page to return in the mail— these are just a few examples of forms that have perforated lines. Other examples are:

Can You Print on Pre-Perforated Paper?

There are pre-perfed papers available for printing that can be used but you will be limited on where exactly the perfs are on the sheet. Dave will perforate your job exactly where you need it on the sheet!

How to Design With Your Perforation in Mind

It’s best to start your design by having a good idea of where your perforation is going to be and then incorporate that into the design. Doing this will help you keep all your text in a safe area from cuts and tearing, as well as have your remaining content neat and centered.
